I haven’t posted anything personal for awhile now and I thought it was time to at least let me family and friends now what’s on the up and up with me. about 8 weeks ago I was told to watch a”food Inc” The person who told me to watch it only recommended it as they know that I love documentaries and great food. haha! I thought perfect. Little did I know, but it turned my stomach as well as my household somewhat upside down. I am not going to get into the political aspects of movie and point fingers here or there, but oh, did it stop me in my tracks. It’s funny though, so much of it I already knew, but didn’t ever really let my mind entertain these theories any further than I knew the meat that I eat comes from a factory farm. I believe I was so shell shocked because I like most of the moms I know, make sure that my kids eat and have plenty of vegetables, fruits and wholegrain food to choose from. I dutifully looked at meat priced and bought what I thought looked good. (you know choosing your meat based on how fatty it looks in the package). The funny thing is Oprah had the journalist from the movie on her show last week and it seems that more and more people know about this and are making small changes as well.
Now when I decide to do something I really go for it. You might say that in a way I become whatever it is that I set out to do. At first though with this situation I really didn’t know what to do. Immediately I sought out local people I knew who raised livestock and asked a ton of questions, then I was on to the fruit and vegetable subject. I know Marty and the kids were freaking out because they thought for sure I would become the Organic principal who carried around the leather strap. Yes it is true we the Schultz’s have gone first as local as possible, then organic and then to choosing whether or not we really want to based upon those criteria.
The search for food in medicine hat this winter has been rather tough. The reasearch took me a month for sure instead of just a few weeks. However the good food box at the health unit is a great place to start. I have also joined living organics here in Medicine Hat. We got off to a bumpy start, but the grass fed meat that I received from them has been so delicious, I actually prefer it over my old favourite, pork. Through talking to friends who are also thinking the same way about food as I have been I also discovered “Poker Cattle”, a ranch in Cypress Hills that also specializes in Grass fed beef. There are still may grocery items that are still on my list that most likely shouldn’t be, but I feel that moderation is key, or all hopes of going out to eat will be gone. We will also be going back to the good ole garden. (ooh wish my brown thumbs luck!)
So to the general public and my knowledgeable mommies and clients is there more places in Medicine Hat to get the kind of food that I am looking for? Are you finding in expensive ways to feed your family local fresh food? Have you seen this movie and did it affect you at all? I want to know what everyone thinks about this.
In the meantime, here is Cariboo in our living room trying out the new wings I made for the studio. wow…my babes….one of the reasons I have changed our view about the food we eat.
